10U/11U Longhorns

(3/21/10) The 10u Longhorns rallied from deficits of 7-0 and 13-6, before falling to the San Marcos Cougars 14-11 on Sunday night.  The Horns showed they can swing the bats in their inaugural debut by scoring runs in bunches, early and late to get back into this game.  If this game is any indication, these boys are going to compete all the way to the last out.

The Longhorn pitching staff threw strikes for the most part, but really struggled to hold runners on early in the game....which coincidentally is where most games are won and lost.  We've spent quite a bit of time working on this aspect of the game, so I think we can attribute some of it to first game nervousness.  We will continue to re-enforce to our pitchers the importance of tempo and rhythm on the mound and disruption of the opponents tempo and rhythm at home plate and on the base paths.

Overall, the Horns played adequately in the infield.  Improvement is needed in "moving without the ball" in relay situations, and the overall outfield play needs to improve.

Overall, this game was of great value to the coaching staff.  You will always learn more in defeat than in victory, so we will move forward and build on the good things we accomplished and continue to work on the little things that all too often make a difference in any game.
