Longhorns win USTBA USA 2009 World Series in San Diego as 12U!

Despite a constantly shifting roster and instance heat, the Longhorns prevailed and took the championship. The coaching staff was extremely proud of the team for stepping up in a far from ideal situation. You really showed character and toughness.

Each game a combination of different players contributed to the final victorious outcome. This included walk off homeruns, clutch hits, outstanding defensive plays, and great base running. Our pitchers rose to the occasion and demonstrated that they are becoming pitchers and not throwers. We also played the game within the game. (bafiaism inserted) This was a great way to end the season with a USTBA World Series championship! I hope the boys enjoy their rings and wear them with pride.

Thank you parents for an outstanding season of support and I am really looking forward to the coming season!

Longhorns win the series

The Longhorns had to win three games in a row to win and that really showed their determination. In the final two games the Longhorns were able to overcome adversity, maintain their composure, and procure the win. These games demonstrated why this game is different than all other sports. It is not determined by a clock, it is determined by outs. Everyone on the team played a role in winning this tournament. This included pitching, hitting, fielding, base running, bunting, focusing in the dug out and catching. I think our kids grew up a little bit as baseball players in this tournament. They experienced a Yogi Berraism. (“It aint over until it’s over! “)

The game was well played by both teams, pitching, and defense, was outstanding. The Longhorns finished 4-1, in tournament play and they are 8-2 in the last two tournaments played.

Success is achieved thru preparation, my supporting cast of Terry, Brad, and Robert need to be recognize, they continue to play a major role in the learning curve of becoming "Real Baseball Players" . They are outstanding men, they understand the process that we have in place, and their contributions on and off the field are a valuable component to growth and development of this organization.

Plain and simple you can't fly airplane without good wingmen.

Memorial Tournament

The Horns  won 4 games and loss one game, and their loss in the semi-finals was a difficult pill to swallow. Sometimes the baseball gods do strange things at the most in opportune times doing a game and that was the case in this game. This team makes no excuses, stands tall, and has established itself as one of the premier Travel teams in the state. They will continue to improve as they mature into young men and when strength is added to their game, defensively they don't take a back seat to any travel team their age group, offensively they all are improving steadily, pitching as well is starting to show steady improvement, situation baseball is area that they will get better as the get more "Real Time" on the diamond and exposure to those on going situations.

They are fun to watch and they make a real effort to play the game correctly, they support and respect each other as teammates, and more importantly the are outstanding young boys who not only will become outstanding High School players but will become outstanding citizens as well.
A well played tournament,

The Horns particapate against the 13 yr Romona Reds and competed, and make accountable showing. Playing on the larger fields and making the needed adjustments in fielding, throwing, hitting, running, along understanding your spacing within the application of the movenment of the game is crucial in becoming a baseball player. This experience at an early age (12) is the begining of becoming a "Real Baseball Player".

We as an organization will continue to expose these players to real game and continue to work on the needed skills to play at the Real Ball Park".

SCAAU Baseball Tournament-San Clemente

The Horns in the past three weeks have played 10 games, won 9, won-two tournaments, and loss  their only game to the number one rank 12 year old  team in the USA. This game was very competitive and lead change hands a couple of times prior to succumbing to defeat 7-5.

They are playing with more intensity, and with each game experience they are gaining valuable experience of what to do, when to do it, and why.

The learning curve of baseball is on going process with more failures than successes, learning how to play and handle the one second game, the game with the game, along with individual work on their skills needed to play their perspective positions, and improving their muscle memory along with their knowledge of how to play the game within a team concept will continue to improve as they grow into young baseball players  and mature into "Real Baseball Players".

These young players are going to be enjoyable watch as the move forward with their playing careers into their High School and Colleges.

Temecula USBA Tournament

The Horns brought home the Gold Buckle. Although competition wasn't elite the Horns exercise their muscles and banged the ball all over the ball park.

Defense was solid and pitching was only average. The boys are collectively competing, playing with enthusiasm, supporting their team mates and are improving on the execution of the faster game. This team will continue to improve, they are athletic and the play with a passion to do well.

May 1 - (UTBSA)

The Horns saddled up, cowboyed up and rode the bull for 8 seconds, twice, and came home with the gold buckle. Collectively, all the players contributed in the outcome of the games. They played aggressively, executed for the most part on both sides of the chalk lines, made good pitches when needed, timely hitting, ran bases aggressively, played real baseball and with a purpose. It was a delight to watch and to be involved in as one of the coaches.

Vince Reilly, a Longhorn from conception of this organization, was the highlight of this tournament and was an inspiration to us all. He is the ultimate team player. He was the number one cheerleader on the bench and encouraged and supported his teammates on the field. As we all know, Vince is enduring  a lot of issues right now and has accepted the challenges that lie ahead for him.

I want to remind all-(players-family members, and friends) that Vince is a Real Player, and we all should take a step back and look at the Big Diamond, and remind ourselves how lucky we are. Thank You Vince for sharing what the Big Diamond is all about....!

Triple Crown Classic Tournament

November 15-16, 2008
Poway, CA
The 'Horns played a total of 11 games in two days--won 8-lost 3--competed well throughout the tournament. All teams are still making transitions to the larger fields, the faster game, and the more competitive play by our opponents.

The older teams need to continue to improve in learning how to play the game within the game. Examples:

  • Understanding the situational hitting
  • Knowing your opponent's strength and weakness (and pitching and playing defense accordingly)
  • Maximizing your ability to improve your game. Examples:  bunting, making contact with runners on base with two strikes, going deep in the pitch count, dugout observation of your opponent, positioning of infield, outfield and what pitches the pitcher is throwing in given situations, playing smart, do the catcher and outfielders throw well, does the pitcher have slow leg to the plate.

These are just a few examples of understanding the game with in the game.

All teams must have a certain mindset: throw strikes, play catch, play smart, play hard, play the one second game, and TRY TO WIN EVERY INNING, one inning at a time and have FUN doing it.

A special note: It was great to see Vince at the tournament rooting his teammates on. His presence inspires us all.

USSSA Tournament

November 8-9, 2008
San Clemente, CA

The Horns traveled to San Clement to play in the USSSA tournament. Collectively, the 'Horns struggled playing catch and making the routine play. Not to belabor the point, but as I have stated numerous times, failure to throw and catch consistently creates a game result issue. (Losses)

Baseball revolves around playing catch. Yes, you need to score runs to win, but not nearly as many if you play catch well. So, we turn the page and continue to work on the skills that will improve their game performance.

USTBA Tournament at Sweetwater Park

October 18-19, 2008
Chula Vista, CA
Both the 12U and 13U 'Horns played outstanding baseball in this tournament. One team came up short in the championship game (9 innings) the other horn team played 10 innings and won in California Tie Rule. Both games were well played on both side of the white lines--defense, pitching, and timely hitting. Each team is improving gradually in understanding how to play "the game within the game", and to use a Yogi Berra saying, "it ain't over until it's over!"

I want to thank our coaching staff for all their help. It takes a combined effort from all to achieve our objectives and that is to "continue to improve these young men as baseball players", and assist them along the way in becoming good young citizens as well. Great weekend of Baseball............!

USTBA Oktoberfest Tournament

October 4-5, 2008
Huntington Beach, CA

The horns competed in the first tournament at this age, and were competitive throughout the tournament. There will be time needed to adjust to the faster game, stronger, faster players and in particular the ongoing strength of the opposing pitching (the breaking ball comes in to play, adjusting to the faster pitching), going to plate with a game plan to execute within a team concept. Pitching and Defense as well need to continue to improve and in particular making the routine play and throwing quality strikes. Finally, as the game continues to get faster we must learn how to think faster, react quicker and understand and execute the game within the game.
